CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's cross country teams took part in a loaded 2019 Royals Challenge on Friday afternoon at McAlpine Creek Park. Queens University of Charlotte served as the host school.
On the men's side, Barton finished 44th overall while Lee, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, was the top team. A total of 57 teams and 519 runners competed in the race.
Barton was led by sophomore Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.), who ran the 8K course in 27:10 and took 236th overall while UNC Pembroke's Joshua Chepkesir (Eldoret, KENYA) was the top individual after crossing the finish line in 23:22.
The women's squad for the Bulldogs took 56th overall and was led by freshman Isabel Reed (Wilson, N.C.). Reed ran the 5K course in 19:58 and placed 203rd.
Lee – the eighth-ranked team in the nation – won the women's competition as well while Wofford's Hannah Steelman (Orono, Maine) crossed the finish line before anyone else in 16:48. The women's race had 63 teams and 541 runners.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams for the Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, October 18, at the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C., at Overton's Lake Kristi.
