Barton Athletics announces administrative changes for 2026-27

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton Division of Athletics has announced several administrative changes for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year.

Ken Tyler, Barton's Vice President and Director of Athletics since the Fall of 2023, has resigned to take the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director at Towson University in Towson, Md.  Tyler's last day at Barton will be August 4.

Under Tyler's leadership, the athletics program has continued to strengthen its culture, elevate the student-athlete experience, and build a strong foundation for future success through the dedication of Barton's coaches, staff, and student-athletes. During his tenure, the Bulldogs captured eight conference championships, added flag football, field hockey, men's and women's triathlon, and saw an expansion and/or renovation of the Michalak Tennis Complex, Tower Administrative Suite, Bulldog Club Room and the Student-Athlete lounge.

Tyler notes, "I've loved working at Barton College, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the athletic program and overall college experience. One of the memories treasured most is the ability to work with first-class student-athletes as they achieve their goals. As always, It's a great day to be a bulldog and I will miss the students, staff and faculty and all that is Barton. Though I'm leaving Wilson, a big part of my heart remains."

Coach Chip Hester has been promoted to Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach effective August 1, 2026. Hester will continue to serve as Head Football Coach while assuming the responsibilities of Director of Athletics, providing continuity for the program while leading the College's overall athletics enterprise. In this role, Hester will report to Amanda Metts, Vice President for Enrollment, Engagement, and Athletics.  This reporting structure reflects the important connection between athletics, enrollment management, student engagement, and the holistic development of Barton's students.

Since joining Barton in 2018, Hester has demonstrated strong leadership, a deep commitment to student-athlete success, and a clear understanding of the important role athletics plays in enrollment, engagement, retention, and campus life. He has also been intentional about strengthening the bridge between athletics and academics, fostering meaningful collaboration with faculty and campus partners to support the academic achievement and overall success of student-athletes.

As Director of Athletics, Chip will provide strategic leadership for Barton's intercollegiate athletics program while continuing to cultivate a culture where competitive excellence and academic success go hand in hand, ensuring student-athletes thrive both on the field and in the classroom.
