Cunningham breaks her own Barton record for second straight week during Elon meet

ELON, N.C. – Barton College sophomore Janae Cunningham broke one of her own school records for the second straight week this weekend while taking part in the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon University.

The Hubert, N.C., resident recorded a toss of 38.35 meters, or 125 feet, 10 inches, in the hammer throw, surpassing her previous best mark of 38.05 meters set last year in the same meet.

Cunningham set the new record while placing 16th in an event field of 36. She also placed claimed a 10th place finish in the javelin, the event in which she posted a new Barton standard last week at High Point University.

Barton received top-five finishes in the Elon meet from senior Sharon Kiptoo in the 1500-meter run (4:59.94, 5th of 29) and freshman Jasmine Watson in the 100-meter hurdle finals (16.32 seconds, 5th of 8).

Sophomore Kelsey Poole added an 11th place showing out of 34 competitors in the shot put after leading her flight with a season-best effort of 11.33 meters.

Fellow sophomore Meghan Araldi set personal records in both the 800-meter run (2:38.68) and the 1500-meter run (5:24.25). Freshman Carla Joseph added a PR in the shot put with a mark of 6.80 meters.

The Lady Bulldogs will visit Virginia State University this weekend for the VSU Trojan Invite.
