Barton uses balance scoring in men's basketball season-opening win over Georgia Southwestern, 80-72

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (1-0) used a balanced scoring attack – with five players reaching double figures – in downing Georgia Southwestern (0-1) by an 80-72 score Friday night on the first day of the Bulldogs' annual 45 Second Classic at Wilson Gymnasium.  The contest was also the season opener for both squads.

Senior forward Bobby Stenborg (Garner, N.C.), an All-Conference Carolinas honoree last year, led the way with 15 points including 11 after halftime to lead the Bulldogs to the win.  Barton sophomore guard Jake Kakar (Boston, Mass.) added 14 points – all in the second half – in addition to four treys as the home team forced the Hurricanes into 18 turnovers in the triumph.

Georgia Southwestern had four players in double figures and was led by R.J. Sessions (Columbus, Ga.) with 17 points in the losing effort.  Quenten Taylor (Edison, Ga.) added 16 points for the Hurricanes, who held a 37-29 edge on the boards despite the loss.

With the score tied at 43 with 15:11 left in the contest, sophomore forward Isaiah Reddish (Durham, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with a trey and Barton eventually increased its margin to as many as 12 points.  Reddish finished with 13 points and senior guard Matt Woods (Swannanoa, N.C.) added 12 points on four treys for the Bulldogs.

The classic continues on Saturday with Barton hosting Augusta (1-0) at 1:00 p.m., after Georgia Southwestern takes on Mount Olive (0-1) in the earlier game beginning at 11:00 a.m.  The Jaguars held off the Trojans by a 77-73 score in the first contest Friday.
