BOSTON – Barton College track team members did not punch any new tickets to the NCAA national meet in their final opportunity of the indoor season on Sunday, but they did produce three new school records during the BU Last Chance Meet hosted by Boston University.
Semaj Street broke his own indoor school record set earlier this year in the 200-meter dash with a sprint of 21.61 seconds in the event at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center. The time was an NCAA provisional mark, but at 26th nationally was not quite enough to get the Fayetteville, N.C., resident into the field for the upcoming NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Barton's indoor record in the women's 200 also fell during the meet, as freshman Jamina Morris sprinted to a time of 25.44 seconds. In doing so, the Edison, N.J., resident took down Breyuana Kittrell's previous record of 25.67 seconds, which was set at the 2015 Conference Carolinas Championships.
The men's indoor record in the 4x400-meter relay was the final record eclipsed on Sunday. Street was part of that effort, joined by Nihgel Scott, Aaron Jones and Collin Wilks. The foursome posted a time of 3:18.51 to surpass the previous standard of 3:19.95 set earlier this month at the Buccaneer Invitational.
Sophomore Larry Russell also took part in the meet. The Sicklerville, N.J., resident missed his school record in the triple jump by three one-hundredths of a meter. He also participated in the high jump, where he was well short of his school record posted at the conference meet.
However, Russell's marks in both the high jump and the long jump at the league championships remain in the national top-10. The official announcement of his selection to nationals will come on Tuesday.
For the rest of Barton's team, the indoor season is complete. The Bulldogs will open their outdoor season on March 17 in two different meets on the same day, the 49er Classic at UNC Charlotte and the Mount Olive Invitational at the University of Mount Olive. Barton will send a split squad to the two sites.
