WILSON, N.C. – Barton baseball won two more games on Sunday, moving its winning streak to nine straight games to open the 2017 season. The Bulldogs defeated Glenville State 19-5 and 9-3 in a doubleheader at Nixon Field.
Barton (9-0) racked up 28 total runs on 25 hits, including five doubles, three triples and three home runs over the two games.
BC, which improved to 12-0 al time against the Pioneers, also swiped eight bases and drew 21 total walks as the Glenville State (0-7) pitchers struggled with control all afternoon.
Game One: Barton 19, Glenville State 5
The Bulldogs scored 10 runs over the first three innings of play in the first game of the day, including six runs in the third inning, to build a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Troy Maslowski had a solo home run in the second inning, while fellow sophomore Ricks Dearing and senior Calvin Hawke each had RBI triples in the third.
After the Pioneers got on the scoreboard courtesy of a Barton throwing error in the top of the fifth, senior Andrew Webster led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to left field, his seventh long ball of the season.
Barton batted around in the fifth inning, allowing Webster to bring two more runs across the plate with an RBI single down the left field line to extend the BC lead to 17-1. Dearing also drove in two runs with an RBI single of his own, while sophomore Gatlin Pate had an RBI double in the frame.
Glenville State scored four runs over the final two innings of play but the Barton lead was too much to overcome.
Sophomore right-hander Dylan Ward (2-0) earned the decision after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Redshirt-junior Josh Mims pitched the final 1.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Webster was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with a home run, four runs scored and four RBI. Dearing also had four RBI in the contest, while Hawke, Maslowski, Pate and senior Tyler Garett each has two RBI.
Game Two: Barton 9, Glenville State 3
BC got a quality start on the mound from junior left-hander Andrew Davis (2-0) in game two to secure the series sweep. Davis went six innings in his third career start, allowing just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Pioneers struck first in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Christian Hedinger. However, BC scored three run on three hits and two walks in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead.
Redshirt senior Chris Davis, Dearing and Garrett each hit one-out singles to load the bases. After Glenville State pitcher James Finnemore recorded a strikeout, he walked the next two batters and allowed BC to score twice. A Finnemore balk scored the third run for Barton in the inning.
An RBI double from Garrett added to the Barton lead in the third before Glenville's Zach Bacon got a run back with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Finnemore walked the first two batters of the fourth inning, bringing his total to 10 free passes in the game, before GSC made a pitching change. Junior Christian Dix singled to center to load the bases before C. Davis cleared the bases with his first career triple. He later scored from third on a wild pitch to put Barton ahead 8-2.
Pate brought Barton's final run across the plate with a sacrifice fly in the fifth as the Pioneer's final run came via an RBI single in the seventh inning to end the scoring.
Maslowski pitched an inning of relief for the Bulldogs, striking out one batter and allowing one run on two hits.
Garrett finished the game 3-for-4 with a double a run scored and an RBI, while C. Davis was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI. Dix also scored twice in the contest and nine different players scored a run for Barton in the win.
The Bulldogs hit the road for the first time this season when they travel up the road to Rocky Mount, N.C. for a contest against N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday, February 14 at 2 p.m.
