WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team scored a total of 27 runs over two games in a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State College on Saturday afternoon in the team's 2016 home opener. BC earned a 17-2 win in game one, followed by a 10-0 victory in the second game of the day at Nixon Field.

With the two wins, Barton has now won five straight games and holds a 5-1 overall record while the Pioneers fell to 0-5 thus far.

Game One: Barton 17, Glenville State 2 (Seven Inn.)

The Bulldogs scored early and often in the first game of the day, totaling 17 runs on just 13 hits and drawing seven walks at the plate.

BC went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first on RBIs from sophomore Hunter Pearre and senior Ben Williams. The Barton lead grew to a 5-0 lead in the second as juniors Shawn Montren, Calvin Hawke and Tyler Garrett each drove in a run.

Glenville State got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, but Barton answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half to build an 8-1 lead.

A run in the fifth followed by an eight-run sixth inning gave Barton a 17-1 advantage before the Pioneers scored an unearned run on a wild pitch in the top half of the seventh and final inning.

Sophomore right-hander Trent Fennell (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after allowing an unearned run on just three hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Freshman Blake Helms struck out two batters and allowed an unearned run in one inning of relief work.

Seven different batters recorded a hit in game one for the Bulldogs, led by Williams who finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and five RBI. Garrett was 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored and four RBI while also drawing two walks.

Hawke had a three-hit performance, including a double, with two RBI and two runs scored, while senior Ben Youngblood was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Pearre, Montren and junior Andrew Webster also drove in a run each for BC in the first game.

Game Two: Barton 10, Glenville State 0 (Seven Inn.)

The Royal Blue and White earned its first shutout of the 2016 season in game two behind right-hander Dylan Ward's second straight quality start.

Ward (2-0), a sophomore transfer from Wingate University, allowed just three hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work to earn his second victory. Senior Ricky Jernigan pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning in his first appearance of the season.

After a scoreless first inning, Youngblood drove in BC's first two runs with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Gatlin Pate scored on a passed ball just two batters late to but the Bulldogs ahead 3-0.

Barton got another RBI from Williams and an RBI from redshirt-junior Chris Davis in the third inning to extend its lead to 5-0 as a double from Pearre to left center put the Bulldogs ahead by six runs after four innings.

Two more runs in the fifth followed by another two runs in the sixth put Barton ahead 10-0 before Jernigan shut the door in the top of the seventh and final inning of play.

Pearre and Davis were each 3-for-4 with two doubles apiece in game two, combining for four runs scored and two total RBI. Youngblood added three RBI of his own as Webster, Williams and freshman Charlie Vaughan also drove in a run each.
