MISENHEIMER, N.C.-Freshman starter Liz White tossed a one-hit shutout to highlight play for visiting Barton College in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader split of two 3-0 games against Pfeiffer University on Monday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field.
Barton (4-11 Overall, 1-4 Conf.) picked up its first league win of the season with the game one victory and Pfeiffer (7-12, 1-3) did the same with the game two triumph.
After numerous cancellations and postponements, the Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play a home doubleheader for the first time this season on Friday when Barton hosts conference foe Queens University of Charlotte. The twin bill at Gillette Park is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
GAME ONE: Barton 3, Pfeiffer 0
White (1-3) earned her first collegiate victory and shutout with the one-hitter as Barton prevailed 3-0. The righty for Windsor, N.C., took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning before sophomore Lindsey Russell was able to produce a one-out single.
The contest remained scoreless until the Lady Bulldogs tallied all three of their runs in the top of the fifth. The decisive rally started with one-out singles by freshman Crystal Britton and senior Elizabeth Webb sandwiched around a walk by White to fill the bases. Freshman Rachel Jordan then put Barton on the board with a bases-loaded single that plated Britton. After the second out was recorded, senior Amanda Schatz provided a big two-run single that scored Webb and Jordan for a pair of insurance runs.
Jordan and Schatz led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits apiece as BC outhit the hosts 9-1.
Webb, who leads Barton with a 1.40 ERA in five appearances, fanned six Falcons in her dominating performance. Schatz increased her team-leading RBI total to 10.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 3, Barton 0
Freshman starter Jessica Griffin was able to help Pfeiffer return the favor with her own complete game shutout in the nightcap. The Falcons scored one run in three different innings to avoid the sweep with the 3-0 win.
Griffin (1-1) scattered five hits over seven innings but Barton was unable to come up with the clutch hit stranding seven total runners on base. The Lady Bulldogs most promising inning came in the fourth when Webb and Jordan led off the frame with back-to-back singles but Griffin recorded two of her four strikeouts to get out of the jam.
Five different Lady Bulldogs had base knocks with White's double to left in the first being the only extra base hit.
Pfeiffer got its first two runs on sacrifice flies in the second and third before a home run by sophomore Ashlee Ellen in the sixth completed the Falcons scoring.
Junior Autumn Pittman (1-5) only allowed two earned runs in a complete game but was tagged with the loss with no run support.
