WILSON, N.C.-Visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College hit an incredible 68-percent of its shots Wednesday night in claiming a 103-88 men's basketball victory over Barton College in the "Dog House."
Surging St. Andrews, who upset league unbeaten Queens last week and has won seven of its last 10 outings, improved to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in Conference Carolinas action in earning a split with the Bulldogs, who stand 12-9 and 7-6. Barton travels to Charlotte on Friday to play Coker College at 2:30 p.m. in Time Warner Arena, home of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats.
A valiant effort from 6-foot-3 senior forward L.J. Dunn was not enough for Barton. Dunn posted game-highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds (his eighth double-double) and hit 14-of-16 foul shots. Barton also got 15 points from foul-plagued junior guard Jaren Haley (Woodbridge, Va.) and 12 points from junior forward Jo Jo Velez (Woodbridge, Va.).
The St. Andrews attack was powered by 6-3 junior guard Ross Williams (Washington, D.C.), who dumped in 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added a game-high nine assists. Junior forward Ryan Streater (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 16, junior guard Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.) tallied 14 and senior forward Marvin Jackson (Gloucester, Va.) canned 14.
The red-hot Knights jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a three-point play by Moffitt, a layup from Williams and a jumper by Moffitt. SAPC never trailed in the game, leading by as much as 17 points (43-26) in the first half en route to a 47-36 halftime cushion.
SAPC hit 19-of-29 shots for 65.5 percent in the first half and got even hotter in the second half, when it drained 19-of-27 for 70.4 percent. Hitting 38-of-56 shots for 67.9 percent, compared to 25-of-71 for 35.2 percent for the Bulldogs, made for a rough night for the hosts, who were victimized by 22 turnovers.
SAPC outscored the Bulldogs 54-30 in points in the paint and 20-4 on fast breaks. Barton did claim a 30-6 advantage in second-chance points, thanks to a 45-27 rebounding advantage.
The Knights steadily built on their lead after halftime, posting their biggest differential of 28 points with 12:25 remaining. The Bulldogs continued to fight, getting as close as 11 points at 94-83 with 2:25 left, but St. Andrews closed with two dunks in a decisive 9-5 run.
