WILSON, N.C. – Barton College Vice President and Director of Athletics
Ken Tyler has announced the removal of the interim tag for Bulldogs' Head Men's Basketball Coach
Joel Zimmerman.
Zimmerman took over as Interim Head Coach this past spring following the retirement of long-time mentor Ron Lievense, who was at the helm for 29 years.
Zimmerman, who was promoted to Associate Head Coach in August of 2018, has been an assistant coach for the Bulldogs for 15 years including two stints: 2006-08 and 2012-25. Zimmerman started coaching with the Bulldogs just in time for the squad to capture the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship and finish the year with a 31-5 record.
"
This is truly a dream realized," said Zimmerman. "
I am incredibly honored and excited to lead the Barton Men's Basketball program. My deepest thanks to (Barton) President Dr. Doug Searcy and Vice President and Director of Athletics Ken Tyler for placing their trust in me to lead this storied program. I am humbled by the opportunity and energized by the challenge ahead."
"
There are no words that can fully express my gratitude to Coach (Ron) Lievense. Over the past 15 years, his leadership, mentorship and unwavering loyalty have helped shape my career and my life. His impact on me is lasting and we will carry on many of his lessons. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to my family for all of their support over the years. Barton Men's Basketball has a proud legacy, and we will not waste a single day working to uphold and build on it both on the court and in the community. We're ready to punch the clock and get to work."
Zimmerman also worked in several other capacities at Barton as well including athletic compliance, athletic development and was Associate Athletic Director of Operations over the past few years.
"
We're pleased to name Joel Zimmerman head men's basketball coach," said Tyler. "
Since his interim appointment, Joel has worked tirelessly to assemble a quality staff and recruit outstanding student-athletes to the program. More importantly, he has been an outstanding teammate and representative of Barton College. Joel understands our proud basketball legacy, while positioning us for an exciting future. This promotion is well-earned and well-deserved."
Zimmerman, a 2003 graduate of Anderson University in South Carolina, also coached at Morehead State University where he served as Assistant Coach and Director of Basketball Operations.
