Barton women roll past Queens

WILSON, N.C.-Sophomore guard Faith Hunter scored a career-high 21 points and the Barton College women's basketball team remained undefeated in league play with an impressive 104-72 Conference Carolinas victory over visiting Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday evening in Wilson Gymnasium.

 

Thirteen Lady Bulldogs scored as Barton racked up over 100 points for the first time this season. Six Bulldogs reached double figures including 14 points by both junior Jannetta Robinson (Willard, N.C.) and freshman Nyeshea Willie (Virginia Beach, Va.).

 

Hunter scored her game-high 21 points from off the bench by going 6-of-8 from the floo, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Barton's bench outscored the Royals reserves 46-16.

 

Barton boasts a 12-2 overall record after winning its sixth straight tilt. The Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated in the conference at 8-0 with the squad's 26th consecutive Conference Carolinas regular season win.

 

Queens fell to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in the league after suffering its third straight loss. Senior Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C.) – the only player in the conference averaging a double-double – paced the Royals with 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  

 

Barton quickly took charge with a 20-2 run to start the contest. The Bulldogs held Queens without a field goal for the first eight minutes and 13 seconds as the Royals began play 0-for-16 from the field. Queens never led and a pair of free throws by freshman Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C.) deadlocked the score for the only time at 2-2 before Barton rattled off 18 straight points. Hunter highlighted the opening surge with a pair of treys.  

The 5-foot-8 Hunter from Raleigh, N.C., scored 12 of her 21 points in the first half as the hosts maintained a sizable 51-22 cushion at halftime. Barton led by as many as 35 in the second half and fired at 45.6% accuracy for the game. Queens was held to just 34.1%.  The Bulldogs forced 27 Royals turnovers with 14 steals, while only making 16 miscues of their own.

Senior Jamila Johnson (Garner, N.C.) swished 12 points and handed out a game-high eight assists. Johnson leads the conference and ranks fifth nationally with 5.9 assists per game. Sophomore Janae Jackson (Fort Belvoir, Va.) scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds as Barton won the battle of the boards, 53-48.  Senior Kelsey Sill (Raleigh, N.C.) bucketed 11 and sophomore Shante Neal (Spring Hope, N.C.) corralled eight boards.

The Royals received 18 points and eight rebounds from Pettaway and 10 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C.).

Barton will wrap up its two-game homestand on Saturday, when the Lady Bulldogs entertain the Valkyries of Converse College in Conference Carolinas action at 2 p.m. Queens hosts league rival St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a rescheduled contest on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
