WILSON, N.C. - The Barton football team (1-4) fell to West Alabama (4-1), 17-7, Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
The Tigers' quarterback, Luther Richesson (Nashville, N.C.), passed for 212 yards and a pair of scores and Elijah Guyton (Cullman, Ala.) kicked the game-winning 23-yard field goal to break a seven-all tie at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter.
Barton's lone touchdown came when junior linebacker
Cameron Royal (Clayton, N.C.) returned an interception for a score 48 yards early in the third stanza.
West Alabama held a 381-121 advantage in total yards and the Tigers were able to overcome 15 penalties for 175 yards in the triumph.
Barton sophomore linebacker
Kylyn Brown (Richmond, Va.) totaled 11 tackles and the Bulldogs did force a pair of turnovers in the setback.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, October 3, when the Bulldogs host Ferrum beginning at 2:00 p.m.
West Alabama takes on Chowan next Saturday at home with a 5:00 p.m., start time.
