Barton women’s soccer shuts out Virginia State, 3-0, for first win of the year

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (1-2) picked up its first triumph of the year, 3-0 over Virginia State (0-3) Saturday afternoon at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
The victory was also the first under new Bulldogs' mentor Jason Hamilton.

Barton senior forward Jenessa Gray (Orlando, Fla.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Bulldogs to the victory.

Gray assisted on the match-winner to open the scoring in the 36th minute with a pass in the box where freshman midfielder Ava Holcey (Savannah, Ga.) found the back of the net.

Barton junior forward Taylor Hartmann (Beavercreek, Ohio) scored after taking advantage of a loose ball off a corner kick in the box with just over two minutes before halftime for a 2-0 advantage.

Gray rounded out the scoring at the 67:02 mark of the second half when she finished off a free kick from freshman defender Victoria Carstens (Saint Johns, Fla.), who was credited with the assist.

In goal, Barton freshman goalkeeper Lily Diedrich (Severna Park, Md.) earned the shutout victory while stopping two shots while Alana Martin (Lanham, Md.) made four saves but suffered the loss in goal for the Trojans.

Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., against Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C., while Virginia State faces Eastern Mennonite at home on Wednesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
