WILSON, N.C. – Barton College Vice President and Director of Athletics
Ken Tyler has announced the hiring of
Greg Englund as Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach and
Jonathan Burke as Head Women's Golf Coach.
Englund recently served as Head Men's Golf Coach at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, N.C., for the past two years (2024-25) and was men's golf mentor for Sunset High School in Portland, Ore., several years ago.
Englund led Sunset to a third-place finish in the state tournament in 2022 and 2023 and was named the 2022 Metro League Coach of the Year.
"
I would like to thank Barton College and (VP and Director of Athletics) Ken Tyler for this tremendous opportunity," said Englund. "
Also, thanks to former Coach (Derek) Hamm for the great golf program he has developed. We will strive to keep it growing and thriving."
A native of Portland, Oregon, Englund graduated from the University of Oregon in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in business administration.
Burke, a 2009 graduate of Barton College, is one of the most decorated golfers in the Bulldogs' illustrious history. Burke is a two-time Barton Male Athlete of the Year (2008-09) who led the Bulldogs to the league championships in 2007 and 2009. Burke also earned NCAA Division II Third-Team All-American accolades in 2009.
Burke won the conference championship in 2007 and was named the 2008 Conference Carolinas Men's Golfer of the Year. Burke also competed in several NCAA Division II National Championship Tournaments. Burke is a former Head Pro at Lane Tree Golf Club and Conference Center in Goldsboro, N.C., and has won multiple amateur championships.
"
I would like to thank Barton College for this tremendous opportunity," said Burke. "
I see a lot of potential with the women's program and with the growth over the past few years, I'm excited to see where it can head in the future."
"
We're excited to add Greg (Englund) and Jonathan (Burke) to our team as leaders of the men's and women's programs," said Tyler. "
We spoke to a wide pool of candidates and Greg and Jonathan stood out for their strong experience as players and coaches, desire to be at Barton and commitment to developing student-athletes in a holistic manner. We have a strong legacy in golf at Barton, and I look forward to Greg and Jonathan adding to it!"
The Barton men's golf team just won its third straight Conference Carolinas Championship this past April while the women's squad placed fourth overall at the league tournament.
