Barton baseball forces road conference doubleheader split with rival Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (28-18, 18-9) split a Conference Carolinas road doubleheader with Mount Olive (25-19, 14-13) Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field.  The Trojans rallied to win the first contest, 7-6, before the Bulldogs salvaged the doubleheader with a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Game One – Mount Olive 7, Barton 6 (seven innings)
The Trojans' Lane McLean (Pine Level, N.C.) hit the game-winning, two-run single as part of a four-run sixth inning as Mount Olive rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take the first contest of the day. 

Mount Olive's Garrett Moffett (Cary, N.C.) added a two-run double and three runs batted in as the Trojans rallied for their second consecutive one-run win over the Bulldogs.

Barton junior third baseman Yariel Diaz (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the visitors with three hits and a pair of RBI in the losing effort.

On the mound, the Trojans' Trey Deutsch (Clayton, N.C.) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to improve to 2-1 on the season while Barton senior Matthew Rivers (Kernersville, N.C.) fell to 2-4 after taking the loss.

Game Two – Barton 7, Mount Olive 2
Barton junior outfielder Salvatore Laimo (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and finished with five runs batted in as the Bulldogs avoided the sweep.

Barton sophomore Dante Onorato (Cinnaminson, N.J.) improved to 4-0 on the year after allowing just one run over five innings of work in relief while Mount Olive's Lucas Glover (High Point, N.C.) (2-3) took the loss.

Barton returns home to take on UNC Pembroke on Friday, April 25, in a conference contest beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Mount Olive travels to Wingate, N.C., to face Wingate Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
