Barton baseball stunned by rival Mount Olive, 7-6, in conference weekend series opener

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (27-17, 17-8) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and fell to rival Mount Olive (24-18, 13-12), 7-6, Friday afternoon in the first game of a Conference Carolinas weekend series at Scarborough Field.

The Trojans' Wade Kelly (Massapequa, N.Y.) was hit by pitch with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning which proved to be the game-winning RBI, scoring Mike Kenney (Chandler, Ariz.).

Kelly finished with three hits while Ryder Hancock (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) drove in two runs for the home team.

For Barton, sophomore outfielder Gavin Gilmore (Eastampton, N.J.) hit his fourth home run of the season and finished with three hits and two RBI while senior outfielder Evan Harding (Clayton, N.C.) added four hits and drove in a run despite the loss.

On the mound, Mount Olive's Hayden Myrick (Clayton, N.C.) (3-2) pitched the final two innings to pick up the win while Barton junior Joe Rauscher (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) (2-5) was tagged with the loss.

Barton and Mount Olive wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at Noon.
