WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (8-4, 4-0) put a statement on Senior Day with a 24-10 victory over Shorter (2-7, 0-4) Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
Barton senior attacker
Kate Matuza (Hampstead, N.C.) and senior midfielder
Kloe Martin (Dracut, Mass.) both finished with six and five goals, respectively, while senior attacker
Avery Woodcock (Wilmington, N.C.) set a new school record for single-game assists with eight as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak to three games and remained at the top of the league standings.
Shorter's Kaitlyn Dwyer-Pepper (Cumming, Ga.) scored a team-high three goals and Cassidy Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) totaled six points – two goals and four assists – but the Hawks simply couldn't keep up with Barton.
Barton, which tied a school record for goals in a game, went on a 14-3 run over a stretch of about two periods to put the contest away. Shorter had cut the margin to one goal – 7-6 – on a goal by Jones with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second period before the Bulldogs started their run.
Matuza leads the team in goals scored (33) while Woodcock ranks first on the squad in assists (22) and total points (44). Barton held advantages in both shots taken (51-31) and ground balls (21-11) while senior
Savannah Graves (Calvert County, Md.) earned the victory in goal after stopping 11 saves. Shorter's goalkeeper, Alley Jones (Canton, Ga.), suffered the loss despite 12 stops on the afternoon.
Barton remains at home to take on Mount Olive in a league showdown Tuesday night starting at 6:00 p.m., while Shorter takes on Southern Wesleyan Tuesday on the road in Central, S.C. at 6:00 p.m., as well.
