WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (6-4, 3-0) remained at the top of the Conference Carolinas standings with an 18-11 win over Young Harris (5-6, 0-2) Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
Barton senior attackers
Kate Matuza (Hampstead, N.C.) and
Tamia Marshall (Wilmington, N.C.) both scored four goals as the Bulldogs raced to a 10-2 lead in the second period and fended off several Mountain Lions' runs in the triumph. Matuza currently leads the squad in goals scored (25) and total points (33).
Barton freshman midfielder
Berghan Balparda (Melbourne, Fla.) totaled five points – three goals and a pair of assists – as well as the home team held advantages in both shots taken (35-29) and ground balls (19-16) in the victory.
Young Harris, who cut the margin to four – 14-10 – early in the fourth period, was led by Niah Anderson (Acworth, Ga.) with three goals.
Barton junior goalkeeper
Avery Gandolf (Medina, Ohio) earned the victory in goal after stopping 11 shots while Abbie Gallagher (Normandy, Tenn.) suffered the setback in goal for Young Harris.
Barton remains at home to take on Charleston (W.Va.) Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m., while Young Harris hosts Southern Wesleyan Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., in a league contest.
