Barton men’s basketball outlasted by rival Mount Olive, 110-105, in overtime thriller on the road

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (14-13, 10-9) fell in a thriller to its rival Mount Olive (11-16, 9-10), 110-105, in overtime Monday night in a Conference Carolinas contest at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive's Chase Dawson (Durham, N.C.) and Matt Kirby (Wilson, N.C.) combined for 74 points as the Trojans avenged an earlier regular season loss to the Bulldogs.

Dawson led all scorers with 38 points while Kirby added 36 points and Christopher Brown (Williamsburg, Va.) hit the game-tying field goal with no time left in the second half to force overtime with the scored tied at 95-all.  Brown finished with 10 points in the victory.

Brown also hit the game-winning field goal with 1:04 remaining in the extra stanza for a 106-105 advantage and the Trojans scored the final six points of the contest for the triumph.

Barton lost despite a career-high 30 points from sophomore guard Sean Quick-Streeter (Columbia, S.C.) and 23 points from senior guard Shawn Nelson (Miami, Fla.).  Quick-Streeter hit all 10 free throw attempts and four three-pointers in the setback.

Barton was playing in its second straight overtime contest and lost despite shooting 55 percent (41-of-74) from the floor.

Barton wraps up the regular season at home on Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Chowan at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Mount Olive takes on UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C., on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., as well.
