Barton baseball drops doubleheader to Newberry Saturday afternoon at home

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (0-3) suffered a doubleheader setback to Newberry (3-0) with a pair of 3-1 and 13-9 losses to the Wolves in an NCAA Division II regional affair Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field.

Game One – Newberry 3, Barton 1 (seven innings)
The Wolves broke a scoreless tie with three unearned runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run single from Chandler Mims (Edgefield, S.C.) while Chansen Cole (Boiling Springs, N.C.) (1-0) earned the victory after allowing just one run in five innings of work in addition to four strikeouts.

Newberry's Brayden Gilson (St. Augustine Fla.) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.  Barton's lone run came in the bottom half of the sixth frame after senior catcher Chase Waddell (Lucama, N.C.) connected on an RBI single.  Barton junior Terel Tillman (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing three unearned runs to go along with six strikeouts while pitching into the fifth inning.

Game Two – Newberry 13, Barton 9
The Wolves' Kade Faircloth (Oviedo, Fla.) hit a three-run home run as part of a five-run seventh frame for the visitors as Newberry finished off the weekend series sweep of Barton.  Mims also drove in three runs while Hunter French (Minneola, Fla.) (1-0) was credited with the win for Newberry.

Barton junior third baseman Yariel Diaz (Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a three-run home run in the losing effort in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late for the home team.  Barton senior Matt Rivers (Kernersville, N.C.) (0-1) took the loss.

Barton remains at home to take on Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference regional affair on Tuesday beginning at 2:00 p.m., at Nixon Field while Newberry hosts Emmanuel Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., in its home opener.
