MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (1-7, 0-2) suffered an 89-82 loss to Chowan (4-4, 3-0) Wednesday night in Conference Carolinas action at the Hawks Athletic Center and Bob Burke Court.
The Hawks' Damerius Summers (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) finished with a team-high 21 points as Chowan remained unbeaten in league play on the season.
Barton lost despite five players reaching double figures including a game-high 22 points from senior guard
Trevur Smalls (Summerfield, S.C.). Smalls made 10-of-12 free throw attempts while senior guard
Caleb Reams (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added 15 points in the setback.
A dunk by Markell Hollis (Gaffney, S.C.) gave the Hawks the lead for good at 77-76 with just over four-and-a-half minutes remaining and started a 6-0 run for Chowan. Hollis had 13 points in 13 minutes for the home team.
Barton looks to bounce back on Saturday when the Bulldogs return home to take on Elizabeth City State at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Chowan, meanwhile, hosts Catawba next Tuesday, December 9, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
