WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (2-4) took Winston-Salem State (4-1) to the wire but fell by a 56-54 score Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Lady Rams' Makayla Waleed (Upper Marlboro, Md.) broke a 54-all tie with the game-winning lay-up with just under two minutes left as Winston-Salem State won their fourth consecutive game.
Winston-Salem State's Nevaeh Farmer (Charlotte, N.C.) led all scorers with 16 points including four treys as the Rams held a 46-35 advantage on the boards and hit eight three-pointers total for the contest.
Barton sophomore guard
Layne Sleight (Jackson, Mich.) finished with a team-high 15 points and sophomore guard
Celeste Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 points but the Bulldogs shot just 34 percent (19-of-56) for the contest in the losing effort.
The game was close, featuring 13 lead changes. Barton lost despite a perfect 11-of-11 (100 percent) from the charity stripe.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday, December 3, when the Bulldogs travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan beginning at 5:00 p.m. Winston-Salem State travels to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae on Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
