WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (5-5-2, 4-2-1) picked up a key Conference Carolinas victory after holding on for a 2-1 win over rival Mount Olive (2-5-4, 1-2-4) Saturday afternoon at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
Barton scored both of their goals in the first half courtesy of junior forward
Hayden Summerfield (Norwich, ENGLAND) and sophomore midfielder
Charlie Mumford (Basingstoke, ENGLAND).
Summerfield opened the scoring at the 11:33 mark of the contest while Mumford headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from graduate student defender
Jeremy Alvarez (Sims, N.C.). Sims and junior midfielder
Dan Ivanov (Croydon, ENGLAND) were both credited with the assist.
Mount Olive cut the margin in half when Kayden Richter (Raleigh, N.C.) scored off a penalty kick just 1:49 after halftime but the Trojans were held at bay the rest of the way.
Barton held a 17-16 advantage in shots taken while senior goalkeeper
Pedro Bonfa (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) made a pair of saves while picking up the win. Mount Olive's goalkeeper, Nick Cutlip (Bunn, N.C.), suffered the loss despite six stops on the day.
