Barton football suffers setback in South Atlantic Conference opener to Emory & Henry on the road

EMORY, Va. – The Barton football team (1-2, 0-1) fell to Emory & Henry (3-0, 1-0), 41-0, Saturday afternoon in the South Atlantic Conference opener at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Wasps' Cam Abshire (Roanoke, Va.) and Cam Peoples (Reidsville, N.C.) both scored two touchdowns while quarterback Charles Mutter (King George, Va.) threw three touchdown passes as Emory & Henry held a 536-149 edge in total yards in the shutout victory.

Peoples scored from two yards out with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half to give the home team a 14-0 advantage at intermission before catching a 26-yard touchdown pass from Mutter on the opening drive of the third quarter to put the contest away for the Wasps.

Barton freshman kicker Andrew Bontekoe (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with 45 yards rushing while senior defensive backs Connor Stanley (Garner, N.C.) and Mike Webb (Winterville, N.C.) both picked off passes in the losing effort.  Barton was shut out for only the second time in school history:  34-0 to Lenoir-Rhyne on October 15, 2022, at home.

Barton looks to bounce next Saturday when the Bulldogs host Anderson, a first-year program, in a South Atlantic Conference contest at 2:00 p.m., at Truist Stadium while Emory & Henry travels to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone Saturday, September 28, at 4:00 p.m.
