MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton football team (1-1) picked up its first win of the 2024 campaign after rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Chowan (0-2), 24-20, Saturday evening at James G. Garrison Stadium.
Barton sophomore running back
Tay Long (Winston-Salem, N.C.) rushed for a game-high 137 yards and scored a touchdown while sophomore quarterback
Trevor Nored (Waldorf, Md.) scored a touchdown on the ground for the second time in as many games as the visitors spotted the home team a 13-3 advantage at intermission.
Long's 11-yard touchdown scamper with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter proved to be the game-winner as the Bulldogs found the end zone on their first three possessions of the second half.
Barton redshirt freshman
Dakauri Davis (Baltimore, Md.) rounded out the scoring with a one-yard run at the 10:19 mark of the final stanza as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks for the third time in three all-time tries. Barton also finished with 210 yards rushing on the night.
Chowan quarterback Maurice Smith (Fort Pierce, Fla.) passed for 97 yards and a score to go along with a team-high 136 yards and a touchdown despite the loss. Chowan also lost its 13th straight game dating back to the 2022 season.
On defense, Barton senior linebacker
Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) led the way with 10 tackles, three quarterback hurries, a sack and a forced fumble.
