BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (5-7, 3-1) fell to Belmont Abbey (7-5, 4-0), 13-7, in a Conference Carolinas showdown Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders' Davis McCulley (Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA) finished with a team-high three goals as Belmont Abbey remained tied with Mount Olive at the top of the league standings.
Seven players scored a goal for the Bulldogs including a goal and assist from senior midfielder
Bryce Washington (Humble, Texas), sophomore midfielder
Tim Blanch (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior attacker
Nic Lord (Wilmington, N.C.).
With the score tied at six early in the third period, Belmont Abbey took control with six straight goals including the match-winner from Jeremy Mahoney (Auburn, Mass.) at the 9:27 mark of the quarter. Mahoney finished with a pair of goals and two assists for the Crusaders, who won their sixth straight contest.
Barton lost despite holding a 50-46 edge in shots taken but the Crusaders' Angus Snow (Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA) tallied 21 saves to pick up the victory in goal. Barton sophomore goalkeeper
Drew Wheeler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) suffered the loss despite 16 stops on the day.
Barton looks to bounce back on Saturday at Truist Stadium when the Bulldogs host North Greenville in a league match beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey takes on Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C., on Saturday afternoon starting at 3:00 p.m.
