YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Barton baseball team (17-5, 4-5) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Young Harris (16-5, 5-4) on Monday at Zell B. Miller Field. The Bulldogs won the first contest by a 4-1 score while the Mountain Lions salvaged the split with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Game One – Barton 4, Young Harris 1
Barton senior
Tanner Halvorson (Eau Claire, Wisc.) improved to 5-0 on the season after going the distance and striking out 11 batters. Halvorson, who also hit his second home run of the year, ran his winning streak to 16 dating back to last year.
Barton sophomore second baseman
Salvatore Laimo (Philadelphia, Pa.) also hit a two-run home run while Ethan Stamps (Madison, Ga.) connected on a solo round-tripper for the lone score for Young Harris. The Mountain Lions' Ryan Cross (Marietta, Ga.) fell to 0-3 with the setback.
Game Two – Young Harris 6, Barton 5
The Mountain Lions' James Basham (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a solo home run and finished with three runs batted in as Young Harris rallied from a 4-2 deficit to split the doubleheader.
Halvorson – who hit another home run – and Laimo both finished with two runs batted in despite the setback. Barton graduate student
A.J. Campbell (Absecon, N.J.) fell to 3-2 after taking the loss.
For Young Harris, Dylan Beck (Chesapeake, Va.) improved to 5-0 after pitching the final five innings in relief while allowing just one run in addition to seven strikeouts.
Barton hosts Saint Anselm on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Nixon Field while Young Harris hosts Lane on Wednesday in a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
