RALEIGH, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (5-2) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 79-76 loss to Shaw (4-3) Tuesday evening at the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears showed tremendous balance with five players in double figures – led by Trent McIntyre (Greensboro, N.C.) with 19 points – as the home team jumped out to a 57-41 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining in the contest and were able to hold on for the win.
Barton was led by senior guard
Shawn Nelson (Miami, Fla.) with a game-high 24 points on eight-of-nine field goal attempts to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a pair of steals. Senior guard
Trey Crews (Durham, N.C.) and sophomore guard
Sean Quick-Streeter (Columbia, S.C.) also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, despite the loss for the Bulldogs.
Barton had a chance to tie but a pair of three-point attempts rimmed out in the final five seconds. Shaw shot just 23-of-40 (58 percent) from the charity stripe which helped keep the Bulldogs in the contest.
Barton returns home to host Erskine in a Conference Carolinas match on Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., at Wilson Gymnasium while Shaw plays at Paine in Augusta, Ga., on Saturday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m.
