PETERSBURG, Va. – The Barton men's soccer team (5-1) responded to its first setback of the year by shutting out Virginia State (1-5-1), 4-0, Wednesday evening at Rogers Stadium.
Barton senior midfielder
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) scored the first two goals of the match and assisted on the final two scores to lead the Bulldogs to the triumph.
Lopes, who leads the team in goals (four), assists (five) and total points (13) so far this season, opened the scoring with a penalty kick just 10:09 into the match.
Barton senior midfielder
Gio Vences (Sanford, N.C.) and sophomore defender
Kai Thurston (Harleston, ENGLAND) rounded out the scoring with goals for the visitors, who held a 15-2 advantage in shots taken in the win.
Barton junior goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) earned the win while Virginia State's Sean Roach (Marietta, Ga.) made five saves despite the setback.
Barton men's soccer hosts rival Mount Olive Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., in a league contest while Virginia State faces Shaw at home on Saturday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m.
