GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Barton football team (4-1, 2-1) recovered from a tough loss last week to pick up a key South Atlantic Conference victory over Tusculum (2-3, 2-1), 17-14, Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Barton junior placekicker
Bear Huggins (Charleston, S.C.) kicked a 30-yard field goal with five seconds left to cap an 11-play, 67-yard drive as the Bulldogs already equaled last year's win total.
Barton was able to hold on after jumping out to a 14-0 halftime advantage thanks to touchdown runs of 53 yards by junior tailback
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) and 10 yards from junior quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) in the first and second quarters, respectively.
Terrell finished with 147 yards rushing on 32 carries and the Bulldogs held a 37:40-22:20 edge in time of possession as Barton defeated Tusculum for the first time in three tries. Lynch, meanwhile, passed for 123 yards and rushed for a touchdown now in all five contests this season.
Barton junior linebacker
Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) tallied a team-high 10 tackles and a pass break-up while junior linebacker
Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) added five takedowns and picked off a pass in the win.
Tusculum was led by quarterback Matthew Palazzo (Greenville, Tenn.), who threw for 170 yards and a score while his four-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter tied the score at 14.
Barton returns home to take on league-foe Newberry on Saturday, October 7, at 4:00 p.m., while Tusculum visits rival Carson-Newman Saturday at 1:00 p.m., in Jefferson City, Tenn.
