Barton football takes care of Newberry, 34-17, in key South Atlantic Conference contest

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton football team (5-1, 3-1) doubled up Newberry (3-3, 2-2), 34-17, in a key South Atlantic Conference Piedmont Division contest Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.

Barton, which already surpassed last year's win total, was led by junior quarterback Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.).  Lynch passed for four touchdowns while running for another score as the Bulldogs defeated the Wolves for the first time in four all-time tries.

Lynch's two-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver DaVon Adams (Durham, N.C.) with three seconds left before the break increased the Bulldogs' lead to 20-10 at intermission and was the last of three straight touchdown drives in the second quarter for Barton.

Lynch capped off the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) with 7:03 remaining in the contest to ice the game for the home team.  Johnson finished with 121 yards on four catches.  Lynch passed for 182 yards to go along with 37 yards on the ground in the triumph.   The Bulldogs finished with 412 yards of total offense.

Barton junior running back Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) added 158 yards on the ground and is now 66 yards short of 1,000 for the season.  On defense, junior linebacker Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) totaled a team-high 12 tackles to lead the Bulldogs.

Newberry, which suffered its second straight loss, was paced by Dwayne Wright (Charleston, S.C.) with a pair of short rushing touchdowns.

Barton hits the road to take on No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne (6-0, 4-0) in a South Atlantic Conference showdown next Saturday, October 14, at 2:00 p.m., while Newberry hosts Catawba next Saturday at 4:00 p.m., in a league contest.
