WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (0-1) suffered a 2-0 loss to Wingate (1-0) Thursday afternoon in the 2023 season opener at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.
Wingate scored a goal in each half and held a 23-5 advantage in shots taken in the first-game triumph.
Wingate found the back of the net off a penalty kick before intermission courtesy of Sascha Larsen (Soendersoe, DENMARK) at the 17:10 mark.
The visitors then gave themselves a 2-0 cushion when Nicole Christy (Indian Trail, N.C.) headed the ball into the net in the 86th minute off a corner kick from Caroline Peters (Sharpsburg, Ga.).
In goal, Wingate's Katrine Thisgaard (Engesvang, DENMARK) notched the shutout victory after making a pair of saves while Barton senior goalkeeper
Cara Davis (Angier, N.C.) suffered the loss for the home team despite four saves.
Barton looks to bounce back on Sunday when it travels to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Wingate travels to Mount Olive, N.C., to take on Mount Olive on Wednesday starting at 4:00 p.m.
