PINEVILLE, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (0-0-1) battled Southern Wesleyan (0-0-1) to a scoreless tie Thursday afternoon in the 2023 season opener at a neutral site. The contest was considered a non-conference regional game between the two league foes.
Barton held a 20-11 advantage in shots taken despite the tie. Junior midfielder
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) finished with seven shots including two on goal while sophomore
Zeph Rico-Jaramillo (Orange County, Calif.) added three shots on goal for the Bulldogs.

Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) made three saves while Southern Wesleyan's goalkeeper, Marco Iniguez (El Paso, Texas), made eight stops to lead the Warriors.
Barton returns home to take on Tusculum on Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Southern Wesleyan hosts Montreat on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
