Barton’s Deshawn Owens named the 2023 league’s outdoor men’s track athlete of the year

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Barton College's Deshawn Owens has been named the 2023 Conference Carolinas Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year courtesy of his performance this past weekend at the league outdoor track and field championships at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Owens, a senior from Pikeville, N.C., won the men's 800-meter (1:54.55) and 1,500-meter (a school-record 3:56.42) races to lead the Bulldogs.  Owens also took seventh place in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:34.76.

The Barton men's squad finished sixth overall with 48 points while the women's team totaled 17 points to take 11th place in the championship.  The host school, Mount Olive, captured both the men's (171.5 points) and women's (206 points) titles for the ninth straight year.

In addition, junior Chase Eaton (Wilson, N.C.) placed fourth overall in the men's 110-meter hurdles (15.07) and sophomore Justin Copper (High Point, N.C.) was fifth in the men's 400-meter dash, clocking in at 49.69 seconds for Barton.

In the field events, Barton senior Quante Downey (Nashville, N.C.) took second in the men's pole vault (13'4") to earn all-conference honors while junior Braxton Fontaine (Rumford, R.I.) took fourth in the men's long jump (22'4").

On the women's side, the Bulldogs were led by freshman Cassandra Schrubb (Piqua, Ohio), who took sixth in the 5,000-meter run (19:46.55) and eighth in the 1,500-meter run (5:07.49).

Barton also had a pair of sixth-place finishes:  freshman Aniya Heckstall in the women's long jump (17'8") and senior Telina Bunch (Hampton, Va.) in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:06.88).  Finally, junior Anna Fretwell (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) ran the women's 10,000-meter race in 43:39.31, good for ninth-place overall for the Bulldogs.
