GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Barton men's golf team captured the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship which wrapped up Tuesday with the third and final round at The Preserve at Verdae.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, finished with an 884 (+20) on the par-72, 6,898-yard course and were 14 shots clear of Erskine.
Barton also captured its first league championship since 2009 and earned an automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Florida. Nova Southeastern will serve as the host institution and the tournament will run from Thursday, May 11, through Saturday, May 13. The Bulldogs also won the conference championship in 2007.
Barton won on the strength of three of the tournament's top four golfers. Barton freshman
Ryan Jahr (Ocean Isle Beach, Fla.) had the low round of the day at two-under 70 and finished second overall with a 218 (+2).
Meanwhile junior
Harrison Wierse (Wilmington, N.C.) took third after firing a 221 (+5) over three rounds of play while sophomore
Mitchell Soma (New Albany, Ohio) totaled a six-over 222, good for fourth place for the Bulldogs. All three players earned all-tournament accolades as well.
Erskine's Tom Bastow (Swanage, ENGLAND) was the individual champion thanks to a three-under 213 performance.
