Barton baseball sweeps home Conference Carolinas doubleheader from King, 4-2 and 18-7

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (7-9, 4-5) swept a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Sunday from King (8-7, 1-7), 4-2 and 18-7, at Nixon Field.  The Bulldogs, winners of four straight games, took all three contests of the league weekend series from the Tornado.

Game One – Barton 4, King 2 (seven innings)
Barton junior Tanner Halvorson (Eau Claire, Wis.) (2-2) threw a six-hitter and hit a two-run home run to lead the Bulldogs to the victory.  Halvorson struck out five batters in pitching his third complete game of the season.

Barton freshman second baseman Salvatore Laimo (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke a two-all with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

King senior Drew Moore (Virginia Beach, Va.) also went the distance but fell to 2-2 on the year while Chase Hilliard (Pasadena, Md.) went three-for-three with a run-scoring double in the losing effort for the visitors.

Game Two – Barton 18, King 7
Halvorson went five-for-five with four runs batted in while senior shortstop Ryan McIsaac (Millville, N.J.) added a three-run home run and five RBI as the Bulldogs scored the final 14 runs of the game to sweep the Tornado.

Sophomore catcher Chase Waddell (Lucama, N.C.) and junior outfielder Carelle Gonzalez (Bridgeton, N.J.) also hit home runs for the Bulldogs, who scored their most runs in a game this season.

Barton junior Brett Anderson (Milford, N.H.) (1-0) struck out six batters in relief and earned the win while Royal Philo (Louisville, Tenn.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.  Hillard had a two-run home run for King

Barton remains home to take on Emory & Henry Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., while King travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to take on Mars Hill Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
