Barton men’s lacrosse comes up short on the road to rival Mount Olive, 14-9

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (6-6, 1-2) suffered a 14-9 setback to rival Mount Olive (4-5, 2-0) Wednesday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas game at the Ray McDonald, Sr., Sports Complex.

The Trojans' Benjamin Vanderkley (Beaumont, Alberta, CANADA) scored a match-high four goals as the Trojans jumped out to a 5-0 advantage just over three minutes into the contest and never looked back while remaining unbeaten in league play.

Barton graduate student midfielder Mark Crawford (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) and junior attacker Bryce Washington (Humble, Texas) both scored twice for the visitors, who cut the margin to 5-4 midway through the second quarter but the Trojans responded with six consecutive scores and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Chapman Parker (Hurley, N.Y.) added three goals for the Trojans, who held a 39-21 edge in ground balls while both teams totaled 41 shots.  Mount Olive also won its third consecutive match.

In goal, Mount Olive's Jacob Brown (Parker, Colo.) earned the win after stopping 12 shots while redshirt freshman Drew Wheeler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) suffered the loss for Barton.  Wheeler was credited with three saves.

Barton looks to bounce back on Saturday when the Bulldogs host Lees-McRae at 1:00 p.m., for Senior Day in a league contest at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field while Mount Olive hosts Belmont Abbey in a conference showdown beginning at 1:00 p.m., as well on Saturday afternoon.
