Belmont Abbey men’s lacrosse rallies to stun Barton, 12-11, in triple overtime

WILSON, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team (6-3, 2-0) rallied from a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to stun Barton (6-5, 1-1), 12-11, in triple overtime Saturday afternoon in a key Conference Carolinas match at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.

Belmont Abbey's Tre Childers (Wallingford, Conn.) scored the golden goal at the 3:05 mark in the third overtime as the Crusaders rallied from an 11-6 deficit to start the fourth quarter to remain unbeaten in league play.

Childers and Matthew Wyatt (Lutz, Fla.) both scored three times as Belmont Abbey won its third straight match.  The Crusaders were able to win despite the Bulldogs holding a sizable advantage in shots taken (62-34) and a 30-23 edge in ground balls.

Barton senior midfielder B.J. Wilson (Tampa, Fla.) and senior attacker Matt Calleri (Holly Springs, N.C.) both finished with a pair of goals and an assist in the losing effort.

Belmont Abbey's goalkeeper, Thomas Sullivan (North Babylon, N.Y.), came up big for the visitors with 18 saves and earned the win.  Barton freshman goalkeeper Drew Wheeler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) suffered the loss despite 12 six stops on the day.

Barton hits the road to take on rival Mount Olive in a league match Wednesday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey hosts Mount Olive next Saturday, April 1, starting at 1:00 p.m.
