WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's volleyball team (3-14, 3-7) fell in a five-setter to Belmont Abbey (12-12, 6-4), 3-2, Friday evening in a Conference Carolinas match at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Crusaders held on to beat the Bulldogs by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 19-25 and 15-13 and swept the season series from Barton.
Belmont Abbey, winners of three straight contests, was led by Matteo Miselli (Reggio Emilia, ITALY) with 14 kills while Matthew Maxwell (Manahawkin, N.J.) added 50 assists, seven digs and three kills as the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the contest and were pushed to a fifth set in the triumph.
Barton was led by sophomore right side hitter
Jake Adams (Clermont, Fla.), who totaled 14 kills while junior outside hitter
Brandon Johnston (Hawkes Bay, NEW ZEALAND) added 13 kills in the losing effort. Sophomore setter
Seth Deppe (Mukwonago, Wisc.) came through with 47 assists and eight digs but the home team suffered its fourth straight loss.
Belmont Abbey was also able to overcome 17 service errors and Barton totaled 12 blocks despite the setback.
Barton remains at home to take on North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday at 2:00 p.m., while North Greenville faces Mount Olive on Saturday in Mount Olive, N.C., starting at 4:00 p.m.
