Barton men’s lacrosse can’t overcome early hole in falling at home to No. 20 Florida Tech

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (5-4) suffered a 17-9 loss to No. 20 Florida Tech (4-2) Tuesday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

The Panthers jumped out to a 10-3 advantage after one period of play and never looked back in the victory.  A trio of Florida Tech players – Collin Stewart (Westminster, Md.), Nate Deplancke (Viera, Fla.) and Justin Carte (Schuylerville, N.Y.) – all scored three goals in the win.

Barton was led by junior midfielder Logan Wheeler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), with five total points – two goals and three assists – while graduate student attacker Mark Crawford (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) also scored twice for the Bulldogs in the setback.  The Bulldogs also suffered their third straight loss.

Florida Tech held a 4-3 advantage midway through the first period before scoring nine straight times to take a 13-3 advantage into intermission.  The Panthers held edges in both shots taken (47-26) and ground balls (38-21) while Jax Francisco (Westminster, Md.) earned the victory in goal after tallying seven saves.  Barton freshman goalkeeper Drew Wheeler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) suffered the loss.

Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when the Bulldogs host Emmanuel beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Florida Tech hosts No. 15 Colorado Mesa on Saturday, March 18, at 3:00 p.m.
