WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's volleyball team (0-6) took Queens University of Charlotte (2-7) to four sets but fell by a 3-1 score on Saturday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Royals, who snapped a five-match losing streak, won over the Bulldogs by scores of 25-19, 30-32, 27-25 and 25-22.
Queens was led by Matthew Pilch (Cedarburg, Wisc.) with a match-high 20 kills while Jack Brinkman (Powell, Ohio) added a double-double – 18 kills and 16 assists – in the victory. The Royals hit .300 for the match compared to a .116 hitting percentage for the Bulldogs and held a 65-43 edge in kills.
Barton – still searching for its first triumph of the season – was paced by sophomore middle blocker
Benjamin Wiechert (Suffolf, Va.) with 12 kills while senior setter
Moses Kresch (Hershey, Pa.) added 36 assists and eight digs in the loss. Barton junior middle blocker
Thomas Fanic (Narbonne, FRANCE) also finished in double figures in kills, totaling 10 on the night.
Queens, an NCAA Division I school, was able to overcome 25 service errors in the match and totaled 10 blocks as a team as well.
Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Friday, February 10, against North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Queens travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to take on Tusculum Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
