WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's indoor track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championships which concluded Monday at the JDL Fast Track.
The men's team took ninth place overall while the women's squad finished in 11th place for the Bulldogs. Mount Olive won both titles with the men's squad winning its seventh straight league championship while the women's team earned first-place honors for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.
Barton senior
Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.) earned all-league accolades thanks to his third-place performance in the men's one-mile run. Owens ran a school-record 4:20.06.
Barton sophomore
Justin Copper (High Point, N.C.) was fifth in the men's 400-meter run (50.78) while freshman
Chace Pearson (Sicklerville, N.J.) took sixth overall in the men's long jump (21'10").
On the women's side for Barton, senior
Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.) ran the one-mile race in 5:31.77 - good for ninth place - and was part of the 1,600-meter relay which took fifth overall (4:16.02). Russell was joined by seniors
Telina Bunch (Hampton, Va.) and
Kayla King (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman
Aniya Heckstall (Greensboro, N.C.) on the squad.
The Barton track and field teams open the outdoor season on Saturday, March 4, at UNC Wilmington Invitational at the Greene Track and Field Complex in Wilmington, N.C.
