WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (0-3) couldn't complete an improbable comeback and fell just short to Wingate (2-1), 86-82, Wednesday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.
Wingate's Donell Nixon (Buford, Ga.) finished with 20 points and Josh Massey (Monroe, N.C.) tallied a double-double – 17 points and 11 rebounds – as the visitors saw a 26-point advantage shrink to one point but were able to win out in the end.
Barton senior guard
Reese McDonald (Raleigh, N.C.) also scored 20 points and added six assists and five rebounds as the home team saw itself down by a 63-37 score with just under 16 minutes left before cutting the margin to one point.
A three-point play by McDonald with 22 seconds left trimmed the deficit to one point – 83-82 – but Wingate iced the game with three free throws.
Barton junior guard
Trey Crews (Durham, N.C.) added 16 points off the bench as the home squad hit 11 three-pointers in the losing effort.
Barton next travels to Mount Olive, N.C., to take on Georgia Southwestern in the Pickle Classic on the campus of the University of Mount Olive beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Wingate hosts Francis Marion next Wednesday, November 22, at 2:00 p.m.
