Barton women’s soccer rolls to a 4-0 victory over Young Harris in the league tournament opener

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (6-5-5) opened the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship with a 4-0 victory over Young Harris (9-6-4) Wednesday afternoon at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.

Barton, the fourth seed in the league tournament, will host rival and fifth-seeded Mount Olive (6-4-7) on Saturday at Noon in the quarterfinal round.  The Trojans defeated eighth-seeded Lees-McRae (3-8-6) by a 1-0 score today at home.

Barton senior forward Kassie Krul (Rockport, Maine) scored twice – giving her a team-leading 10 goals on the season – including a pivotal one with just eight seconds remaining just before halftime for a 2-0 advantage.

Krul added a penalty kick goal just 3:55 after the break while senior midfielder Anna Fretwell (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) opened the scoring with her third goal in the last four contests in the 29th minute, finishing off in the box with a bicycle kick.

Barton senior forward Lexis Goldberg (Sanford, N.C.) rounded out the scoring with just under five minutes left for the Bulldogs, who held an 18-15 advantage in shots taken in the triumph.

Barton senior goalkeeper Cara Davis (Angier, N.C.), the reigning league defensive player of the week, stopped eight shots for her fifth shutout on the year while the ninth-seeded Mountain Lions' McKenna Peaster (Clarkesville, Ga.) suffered the loss in goal for the visitors despite stopping six shots.
