Barton football succumbs to No. 12 Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference showdown

HICKORY, N.C. – The Barton football team (5-2, 3-2) suffered a 47-3 loss to unbeaten and No. 12 Lenoir-Rhyne (7-0, 5-0) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference showdown at Moretz Stadium.

Lenoir-Rhyne quarterback Jalen Ferguson (Clemmons, N.C.) threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns while the Bears found the end zone on all five possessions in the first half to put the contest away early.

Lenoir-Rhyne wide receiver Deondre Lester (Washington, Ga.) opened the scoring with a 48-yard touchdown reception to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive on the game's initial possession and finished with two touchdown catches while wideout De'Aree Rogers (Lexington, S.C.) added 150 yards receiving on 11 catches and a score in the triumph.

Barton's lone score came courtesy of a 38-yard field goal by junior placekicker Bear Huggins (Charleston, S.C.) on the Bulldogs' first possession but were kept off the board the rest of the way.  Lenoir-Rhyne held a 515-148 edge in total yards as well.

Barton junior running back Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.), who came into the contest ranked second in the nation in rushing yards (155.7 ypg), was limited to just 54 yards while junior linebacker Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) led the Bulldogs' defense with 14 tackles.

Barton looks to bounce back next Saturday, October 21, when the Bulldogs host Wingate for Homecoming at Truist Stadium starting at 2:00 p.m., while Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Newberry, S.C., to take on Newberry starting at 4:00 p.m.
