Barton men’s soccer plays rival Mount Olive to a 1-1 tie Wednesday at home

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (4-5-2, 2-3-1) fought rival Mount Olive (2-5-2, 2-3-1) to a 1-1 tie in a Conference Carolinas match Wednesday evening at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.

The Bulldogs, looking to avenge an earlier regular season loss to the Trojans, opened the scoring in the 27th minute when junior forward Gabriel Slemer Lopes (São Paulo, BRAZIL) grab a loose ball just off the left side of the box and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Slemer's shot hit the crossbar and bounced in.  Slemer is currently the conference men's soccer player of the week.

Mount Olive, playing with a man up, tied the score at the 83:34 mark of the second half when Guilherme Semola (Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL) scored in front of the net off a free kick from João Barboza Filho (Governador Valadares, BRAZIL), who was credited with the assist along with Amin Ferreira (Winter Garden, Fla.).

Barton held a 14-9 edge in shots taken while senior goalkeeper Jonathon Joplin (Newton, N.C.) made three saves for the Bulldogs.  Mount Olive's Axel Engren (Sundsvall, SWEDEN) also allowed just one goal while stopping two shots.

Barton returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 7, at 3:00 p.m., when the Bulldogs travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey while Mount Olive takes on Emmanuel in Franklin Springs, Ga., on Saturday starting at 4:00 p.m.
