WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (4-5-4, 4-4-3) battled UNC Pembroke (9-3-2, 7-1-2) most of the way but gave up a late goal in a 2-1 loss to the Braves Saturday evening in a Conference Carolinas contest at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
The Braves' Mercy Bell (Jacksonville, N.C.) scored both goals – giving her a league-leading 18 on the season – including the match-winner with just under 17 minutes remaining in the contest as UNC Pembroke swept the season series from Barton. Anna Grossheim (Garner, N.C.) was credited with the assist after finding Bell in the left corner right in front of the net.
The Bulldogs had tied the score at one with just 36 seconds remaining in the first half after senior midfielder
Anna Fretwell (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) finished off a corner kick in the box courtesy of senior midfielder
Maddie Underwood (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The goal was Fretwell's first of the season.
Bell also scored in the 21st minute while the Braves held a 19-13 advantage in shots taken. In goal, UNC Pembroke's Chiara Coppin (Monroe, N.C.) stopped four shots and earned the victory while Barton senior
Cara Davis (Angier, N.C.) made eight saves but suffered the loss. UNC Pembroke has also won four straight matches.
Barton remains at home to take on Shaw on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., while UNC Pembroke returns home to host Francis Marion in a league showdown Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
