WILSON, N.C. – The Barton football team (5-3, 3-3) couldn't rally from a 21-point halftime deficit and fell to Wingate (5-3, 4-2), 38-24, Saturday afternoon in front of nearly 3,000 fans on Homecoming at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.
Wingate quarterback Brooks Bentley (Venice, Fla.) passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns while Tremel Jones (Hamlet, N.C.) caught seven passes for 163 yards as the visitors jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead and withstood a third-quarter rally by Barton to take the win.
Barton took advantage of back-to-back fumbles by Wingate in the third stanza to rattle off 17 straight points to cut the deficit to 28-24 but the home team couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Jones caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Bentley with 12:41 left in the final period to help Wingate take back control. Wingate finished with 479 yards of total offense in the triumph.
Barton junior quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a seven-yard touchdown catch from junior wide receiver
Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) early in the third quarter despite the loss. Lynch, however, was hurt by a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions in the setback.
Johnson caught nine balls for 187 yards and scored on Barton's first offensive play of the game: a 75-yard scoring toss from Lynch. On defense, Barton junior linebacker
Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) led all tacklers with 13 takedowns.
Barton junior running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) crossed the 1,000-yard mark on the ground for the third straight season after finishing with 54 yards on the day. Terrell also caught six passes for 71 yards and a score.
Barton hits the road to take on Catawba next Saturday, October 28, in Salisbury, N.C., beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Wingate hosts Lenoir-Rhyne next Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
