FLORENCE, S.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (6-6-3, 4-4-2) fell to Francis Marion (7-1-5, 6-0-3) by a 3-0 score on Tuesday evening at Hartzler Field.
The Patriots' Edorta Cabieces (Bilbao, SPAIN) scored twice for the home team as Francis Marion remained unbeaten in league play and swept the season series from the Bulldogs: Francis Marion won over Barton by a 3-2 score on Saturday, September 23, in Wilson, N.C.
Mario Buelga (Gijon, SPAIN) opened the scoring just 10:05 into the match after finding the back of the net from about six yards out off a pass from Luis Villarreal (Bluffton, S.C.), who was credited with the assist. Cabieces now has a team-leading seven goals on the year.
Francis Marion held a 8-6 advantage in shots taken while Felipe Ramos Peralta (Arica, CHILE) earned the shutout win in goal after stopping five shots. Barton sophomore goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) suffered the setback. Gunnarsson, the reigning league defensive player of the week, made one save on the evening.
Barton next takes on league-foe North Greenville in its regular season finale on Friday, October 27, at 5:00 p.m., in Tigerville, S.C., while Francis Marion faces Young Harris in Young Harris, Ga., this Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
