WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (6-5-3, 4-3-2) picked up a critical Conference Carolinas victory Saturday evening with a 2-1 win over Emmanuel (6-4-1, 5-2-1) at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
The Bulldogs' sophomore forward
Zeph Rico-Jaramillo (Orange County, Fla.) broke a one-all tie with the match-winner – his third goal of the year – in the 72nd minute after receiving a long pass from freshman forward
Hayden Summerfield (Norwich, ENGLAND) and finishing just outside of the box to the right side.
Rico-Jaramillo launched a shot just over the outstretched arms of the Lions' goalkeeper and the Bulldogs were able to hold on from there.
Barton senior forward
Gio Vences (Sanford, N.C.) opened the scoring in the 57th minute after heading the ball into the net off a free kick from graduate student midfielder
Nico Rocksien (Jersbek, GERMANY). The goal was Vences' first of the season.
Emmanuel's Matt Fitzer tied the score up at one with his team-leading ninth goal of the year after receiving a long free kick from Tomsa Pollacchi (San Andres de Giles, ARGENTINA) at the 68:35 mark of the second half. Pollachi was credited with the assist.
Barton held a 25-11 advantage in shots taken while sophomore goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) earned the victory after stopping a pair of shots. Emmanuel's Natxo Faus (Alicante, SPAIN) made eight stops but suffered the loss.
Barton hits the road on Tuesday night to face Francis Marion in a key league contest beginning at 7:00 p.m., in Florence, S.C., while Emmanuel returns home to play Young Harris Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
